Slainte, A Celebration of Irish Culture

  • 500 University Drive Hummelstown, PA, 17036 United States (map)

Sláinte, a celebration of Irish Culture is the Harrell Library’s St. Patrick’s Day gift to the Campus.
It will take place from noon to 1:00 PM in Lecture Room D on March 13th 2019

Hosted by Irish singer, Seamus Carmichael the event will feature performers from the Penn State, Hershey community and from Carmichael’s network of contacts in Irish Music, Poetry and Dance.

The musicians are an eclectic group of local players and singers, including Mary Kate Lee, Jamie O’Brien and Henry Koretzky, who are regular visitors to the campus as part of the Center Stage program. Rounding out the list of musical performers are Danny George-Humanities, Marc Lubbers-Medical Student Affairs, Eliza Donne-Library and Rob Riley. We also plan to have an Irish dance group performance led by Medical students, Molly Carney and Mary Elizabeth Stein

Slainte (which means “To your health” in Gaelic, is the Irish equivalent of “Cheers” when you are raising a glass) will give people an Irish cultural experience built around the distinctive dance music of Ireland as played in the “Session” where musicians meet to share songs and tunes old and new. It links the music of the country, ancient and modern with the literary arts of Ireland as seen in the work of a number of Irish poets.
